I will let everyone know upfront that I do not follow sports and that I do not play many sports related games. I do understand the rules and much of what the game is about but I just don't enjoy sports or soccer that much. And with that I will say that Worldwide Soccer Manager is not all that hard a game to figure out nor is it that difficult to master all the various parts of the game to affect the team and their playing. Now notice that I did not say that I had mastered the game and won, I found out that you can change all kinds of things for your team and affect how they play and if they win. With that said I found that Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 is a great game and well worth buying if you enjoy sports games.
Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 follows the other popular football manager titles from Sports Interactive as the third soccer manager game. Other Sports Interactive management games are NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007 and Out of the Park Baseball Manager 2006. Sega of the Sonic the Hedgehog fame is the publisher for the current Sports Interactive titles.
This is probably the hardest game I have had to rate for an actual number while writing a review. Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 does not necessarily equate into an easy pick up and play game but you need to spend some time playing to get any kind of satisfaction out of it. Not to say that winning one match or even just not losing is not wholly satisfying. The games entire premise is that you are a manager of a football team and you need to make many of the decisions of one in order for your team to succeed.
Not only telling the owners who to recruit or trade but down to the team and game level of putting in new players when one gets tired or hurt. The games are where you get to see the results of your hard work and careful homework of studying statistics but there is one other quick way. When your owners boot you out of your job you can kind of tell that the job you have been doing is not exactly up to par for the good of the team.
You start off your management career by choosing your team or teams, your manager background and other important data. During your career you will have the chance to trade players, choose to send out recruits for new players, manage all aspects of your team down to minute details and of course direct the action during the games. There is a whole host of things you get to do and manage your team but there is certainly too much to describe in a review. From talking to the board of owners where you can ask for better facilities down to individual pep talks to players during the games there is just about everything you could imagine to do as your teams manager.
Games are played out in an accelerated time that you control and during the game you can choose which of your players to start, which are your replacements and their particular style of play. During the game you will have to choose who switch out due to injury, fouls, or just from being tired. You can change the formation which is probably the most important part of your team play as this will decide what type of offense and defense your team has according to the players you use. Your tactics during the game can be at the standard that the game starts with or you can change certain instructions by changing mentality, creative freedom, passing style or many other team aspects. The formation is the positions on the field you have for each player and this is a big factor in whether you win but the players you have and their abilities also have a lot to do with your formation and team.
Your player's abilities, injuries and personal performance during each match and while they are training between will affect how they do during the match. Some players are better in some positions while using certain tactics over others is where the position, team and player's tactics and your decisions during the games make all the difference in winning. While you're not playing the match you need to supervise the training of your players, make sure the injured ones are getting attended to by your team physiotherapists and scout out replacements by using your assistant coaches and staff. Many of these features of the game are easy to figure out and use but the manual and even the forums help because there is just so much to learn about and do even if you play football or watch it as a regular fan.
A manager does not just jump in and start telling every one what to do and get instant results either, you have to build a reputation and work hard at doing the right things for your team or the fans and owners will start to question your abilities. If you continue to do things the correct way and win games you will be alright to continue to manage the team but if you lose and the team suffers from your mismanagement than the owners may just listen to those angry fans and oust you. And thus ends the career of a promising football manager.
You can always start over with the help and hints of past failures to try your luck with a saved game and try to bring your team out of a bad streak or just start the same team over from day one or another team in a new career. The game is easy enough to start more than one career to try different styles of managing and you have your choice of the several leagues and the huge selection of teams from all over the world. Once you do get the hang of managing and don't lose every game then you can start managing more than one team and work at a very promising career with the goal of having other teams vying for you as their manager.
Worldwide Soccer Manager's gameplay has you of course picking your team and other things at the start and then you do your best between games to train, recruit and manage the team. You then play your matches using one of several views like actually watching the games being played on a field or just getting the highlights in a ticker across the screen while the games statistics are displayed for you to keep an eye on. On the field view the players are small dots with your teams' colors that kick around a soccer ball in realistic looking play. There is also a commentary box running across the bottom of the screen that has the important moments of the match so you don't miss things.
The games engine takes all the players skills, injuries and particular state of conditioning into count when playing as well as the other teams to decide how the play goes. The game also uses physics because we are talking about a real world event and the soccer ball does react accordingly using physics to the kicks and such in play. You also get to pause the game to choose new tactics while playing or to swap out players. If a player gets injured enough that he cannot play you need to decide who to replace him with. During play you should also watch the statistics of players to swap them out when they start to get tired and not play up to their full potential. You have a whole assortment of tactical play styles preset for you to use in matches or you can try your skill at making your own and saving them to use in games.
The events that occur out of a match like injury status of each player, recruiting and scouting, training and the board of owners meetings that are kind of important for you to attend to keep an eye on are displayed as news events and separate screens for you to read and save as notes. The news events will also include other teams' rankings and games along with any important news about other team players injuries that may affect your future games with them. There is a note screen for you to type in reminders or notes in the game for your convenience so you don't have to keep paper and pencil at hand during your playing.
They have thought of so much for Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 that it is pretty staggering when you first start looking around at all the various parts and try to figure out all of what you are supposed to do. But the game comes with help in the form of a quick tutorial which is actually a help section that covers the basics and the manual is another source of gameplay advice along with the Sports Interactive website forums.
The games graphics and sound were pretty good with easy to understand screens for the various parts of managing. On the main page when you start your session of managing will be some pull down menus under the headings across the top of your screen that is there at all times. These four main menus start with your Manager menu for things that you do personally; news, board room, scouting, training, your notebook and such. The World menu lets you check out your competition from all the leagues and teams playing soccer around the world. The Options menu has all your game options and playing preferences on it as well as where you save your game and quit. There is another pull down menu for bookmarks that lets you place a bookmark on any one menu page you want for quick access to that page.
When you are in any one menu there is also a menu tree on the side of your screen as well as the pull down menus across the top for you to quickly find and go to any particular screen you want. There are also icons across the bottom with the main areas to go to for another way to jump to different screens. They have added all these different ways to quickly get around to the different areas and it is things like this that show they have extensively tested and used people's suggestions from their previous games for creating the interface and screens of the Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007.
The sound in Soccer manager was one area that was not left out in its entirety but they have no background sounds or music playing while in many parts of the game. During the matches they have the usual cheering you would expect to hear at any sporting event. That was all there is to the sound but it is not necessarily a down grade for the sound. It would be very difficult to come up with some kind of music or background sounds to have playing while doing your work as a manager so they just left it out and concentrated on the real heart of the game and all the various ways to help you effectively manage your teams.
Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 is very highly rated when it comes to value for this type of game. They have kept many of the aspects that are important to managing a sports team as simple as possible and yet keep you so involved with your team that everything you do has some effect. You need to learn so much about the team and all the aspects of the sport of soccer in order to play well but they have made it so easy and interesting. Just playing for a season or two will get you familiarized with the game and how to effectively manage a team so playing beyond that will become more enjoyable while you're trying to win at your league level. Although this type of game is not necessarily one I would go out and purchase I did enjoy it and would happily play other sports manager titles that are of this quality and so easy to learn how to play. I know it sounds like I would not buy World Soccer Manager 2007 but if you are into team sports games of any kind this is one game that is worth looking at.
Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 is a great sports simulation game that puts you in charge of your own soccer teams. You get to choose all the aspects of team management and get to live with the consequences of those choices. Using many real world players you will be sure to enjoy the thrill of winning and the determination to do better if your team does not fair that well in the league of your choice.
